Lube 101, Why everyone should have it in their home?

Lubricants are one of the most popular products designed to spice up sex life. Unlike typical toys, lube can be purchased virtually anywhere, in erotic stores, pharmacies, supermarkets or drugstores. Many people think that using lube is a sign that ‘something is wrong’, especially for those with a vagina. However, the truth is that there is no sexual experience that can’t be improved with a little extra slip.

It is a mistake to think that lube should only be used for vaginal dryness. The purpose of these products is to provide better and more comfortable sensations during sex. Nowadays lubes available on the market offer many additional functions besides the additional lubrication, which can significantly influence the pleasure of stimulation and even the length of intercourse.

Water-based? Silicone-based?

Before choosing a lube, it’s a good idea to consider what type will be most suitable for you and your needs. They differ in composition, consistency, color, scent and even taste. The most basic division of lube, divides it by its base:

  • Water-based Lubricants – Known as the most “versatile,” water-based lubes can be used with virtually any activity imaginable. They can also be safely used with all silicone toys. This type of lube can be easily washed off with water.
  • Silicone-based lubes – These have the advantage of being more durable and slippery than water-based ones. They do not dry out or absorb quickly, so you need to use less of them. They are especially recommended for anal intercourse and for play in the bath or shower. Their biggest disadvantages include the possibility of damaging silicone toys and the fact that they are difficult to wash off.
  • Oil-based lubes – These types of products provide a decent moisturizing and lubricating effect. Their main use is in full body massage. They are not recommended for internal use because firstly the body may have trouble excreting them and secondly they can damage latex and synthetic materials, which is why they cannot be used with condoms.
  • Hybrid Lubricants – A hybrid lube is mainly a water-based lube with a smaller proportion of another base, usually silicone. This type of product has the advantages of both water-based and silicone-based lubes, is easy to wash off, is more effective and lasts longer than water-based lubes and is often safe for silicone toys. However, it’s a good idea to do a test and put a drop on a toy before using it to see how it reacts. As you can guess, they come at a higher price.

What to avoid when choosing a lube?

As with all erotic accessories, it is worth paying attention to whether they are safe for the body. As the number of additional functions offered by lube increases, so does the length of its composition and the substances it contains.

There are a few ingredients that are better avoided in lube formulations, as they may (or may not) cause irritation or inflammation:

  • petroleum
  • propylene glycol
  • nonoxynol-9
  • glycerin
  • chlorhexidine gluconate
  • parabens

Additional features of lubes

The primary function of lube is to increase slippage. This is not just to provide more pleasure, but also to make sex safer. Lubrication reduces friction, which therefore reduces the risk of injuries, such as abrasions, that can lead to infection. When condoms are used, they are also less likely to break or fall off, and this increases protection against sexually transmitted diseases (STDs).

However, in addition to increasing glide, modern lubes have a number of additional features designed to add variety or enhance the pleasure of sex. The most common feature is the various flavors of lube that are designed to add diversity to oral sex. In addition to the usual fruity flavors such as strawberry, cherry and pineapple, there are also flavors that will appeal to sweet lovers: chocolate, tiramisu and the so-called ‘bubble gum’.

The unique taste is not the only function that lube can serve, however. Another popular category are lubes that add extra sensations – cooling, warming and the recently introduced vibrating (tingling). Such lubes offer new sensations during play. It should be noted, however, that the choice of additional stimulation should be based on personal preference, since additional sensations are not to everyone’s liking.

There are also a number of products with more specialized applications such as:

  • Hypoallergenic – with a gentle formulation that is designed for people with sensitive skin.
  • Ejaculation Delayers – which gently desensitize the penis and as the name suggests, thereby enabling longer intercourse.
  • Assisting in fertilization – they ensure the appropriate PH factor, which facilitates sperm movement and extends their life.
  • Firming – containing, among other things, vitamin E, which increases the elasticity and strength of the vaginal walls

As you can see lube is a very versatile product offering a variety of possibilities. And more importantly they can be used regardless of age, gender, sexual orientation or preferences and fetishes. There is no such thing as a “typical” lube user. They can be used with a partner as well as during solo masturbation, on the body and on toys.

This doesn’t mean that everyone should have a box of ‘lube for every occasion’ in their home (although those who are more sexually active will definitely benefit), but it’s definitely worth looking for at least one lube that you like and always having it in your home.
