On Monday, the world was abuzz with the news that the iconic animated series ‘Harley Quinn‘, which is known for its high levels of violence, black humor and many other adult elements, was to include a scene in which Batman performs oral sex on Catwoman.
Harley Quinn, despite being an animated series is aimed primarily at an adult audience. It tackles themes of abuse, sexuality and sexism in a satirical but also digestible and humorous way. According to executive producer and co-creator of the series, Justin Halpern – it’s incredibly gratifying and free to be using characters that are considered villains because you just have so much more leeway.
However, as it turned out, not every idea the creators had was approved by DC – A perfect example of this is in the third season of Harley, we had a moment where Batman was going down on Catwoman… And DC was like, ‘You can’t do that. You absolutely cannot do that.’ They’re like, ‘Heroes don’t do that – said Halpern.
The reason DC did not agree to the racy scene is obvious, money. The owners of the Batman and Catwoman characters want to follow their own rules regarding the characters’ behavior to protect the franchise and consumer product sales.
So, we said, ‘Are you saying heroes are just selfish lovers?’ They were like, ‘No, it’s that we sell consumer toys for heroes. It’s hard to sell a toy if Batman is also going down on someone – continues Halpern.
Interestingly enough, a hot scene between Lois Lane and Superman was featured in one of the DC comics in the past. As you can see in the image below, after having intercourse, a naked Lois wrapped only in Superman’s cape says ‘Incredible. Just as mind-numbingly incredible as it was the first time… You really are something, man of steel.’
Well, apparently violent fight scenes and murder are perfectly appropriate for toys. Oral sex, on the other hand, between two consenting adult characters is harmful and iconoclastic.
