Dr. Lori Beth Bisbey, a leading psychologist, sex/intimacy coach, author, educator and media personality, explores the practice non-monogamy in a new UK six-part TV series, Open House: The Great Sex Experiment.
Bisbey stars in the groundbreaking ‘social trial’ that follows eight monogamous couples as they open the door to open relationships while at a luxury country retreat, guiding them on a series of personal – and highly emotional – challenges in a therapeutic space to test the notion of what ‘commitment’ truly means.
“Monogamous relationships have always been the accepted norm, but what if sexually curious couples decided to invite another person, or people, into their relationships?” said Bisbey. “This new series offers a voyeuristic peek into the lives of people making life-altering sexual choices, and examining the consequences of those choices through therapy.”
Bisbey also noted that a recent Channel 4/YouGov survey revealed that 20% of UK adults (all ages) are curious about a threesome; 22% of people under age 35 are either in an open relationship or open to being in one, and nearly 40% of adults (all ages) have been cheated on.
“In my opinion, opening up your relationship consensually is much more likely to save it than harm it… as long as people are able to be honest and authentic and have excellent communication and emotional management skills, there are a variety of non-monogamous options.”
